I will probably get a lot of slack and criticism for this but what the Hell.
I made this video as a social experiment to dissect female sexuality in Japan. While the topic will require a lot more than a blog post because of its mass complexity, this might be a good impetuous for a debate and analysis.

That is a really interesting viewpoint (about suppressed sexuality). Do you think that it is their fault though? I would think that its decades… no centuries of traditional repression of those feelings. We all know that it went on, but it was not really talked about. With the younger generation, however, we are seeing a shift to more of a western view of things, including sexuality.

Westerners especially men see Japanese women as Sex slaves, but they are deprived, abused, and misguided individuals.
I have nothing but pity and respect for Japanese women They are very sensual and loving, but Japanese society as well as the West has made them into this illusion of what they are not.
Sadly the Japanese women trying to live up to this illusion.

I’m not an expert in Japanese society, but most public health workers are women… so you know what the viewpoint of so called social science is. Keep in mind that the self help industry is based on vanity and consumption. They can’t sell books to men about psychoanalysis. Yes Freud 100 years ago spoke as a man, and he might of been the last. He wasn’t selling books, but rather was, without any real power, dealing with real people by himself . (innovative for his time, but today they want to write him off as a pure misogynist… when the real institutional failures of psychoanalysis began with his daughter Anna who created the power structure) Today you have to make it on Oprah to be legitimate. Our understanding of who benefits in foreign society is usually wrong. Saudi women have superior lives to the average Arab male… and most elitist tyrannies are not upheld by the minority men in power, but rather by institutionalized women. those ladies with the cloth over their heads are laughing at our arrogant women with their painted faces. We have erred in understanding our worst enemies. You can’t beat an enemy you don’t understand.
My own understanding of Japan is that it is not so much repressed sexually, but rather repressed verbally… but I could be wrong because I have not given Asian culture a lot of thought because they are a peaceful people these days. They seem to be a lot more adventurous, but they don’t talk about it. The mainstream media seems pornographic… am I wrong? So they are a culture of voyeurs/watchers? Objectivity tends to bring on shame. There seems to be an awful lot of this feeling there. They have no issue with sex as long as it can remain a secret. I have had a few Asian lovers and privacy was a real issue… but they were a bit more kinky (I mean that in a good way.)

Noah, you raise so many interesting points here. I will try to address them one at a time and I feel there will be more post about this issues and their influence on western society and civilization as a whole.
Japanese people women and men are both repressed sexually. But you touched on a very interesting point, “communication”

Hi Igor,
After watching that video, what I see is very pretty young Japanese girls, who are quite shy, and frightened of either the camera, or the man behind the camera. They don’t seem vain at all, but do seem quite Westernized. I was looking at what they were wearing, and most look like the teens here in the US, and dressed the same way. Also, they hang out in McDonald’s, really Westernized…they even eat our junk food!
It seems as if we have had a lot of influence on them, which I am not sure if it is wrong or not. More than likely wrong. Their own society has suppressed them in the past, and men have run their lives, as they have become slaves, and prostitutes for the men. It is a no wonder that their sexuality has been suppressed, and now it “explodes in a mad crescendo!”
The Japanese Society has really done a job on these woman, and our Western ways haven’t helped either. They are only doing what they were taught by their own Society.

Let’s just look at the situation and reverse it.
A strange and older Japanese man with a video stuck to his face starts hooting and hollering at random white women in an American mall. It seems that he is focusing the lense on their legs and is continually saying things in Japanese which the girls might not understand except for a few words like “sexy.”
How would they react?
My guess: Probably the same way - they’d feel embarrassed, ashamed, and more. What you did in the video Igor was essentially cat-call women. The reactions you got aren’t anything strange to Japanese women - it’s the natural reaction you get from anyperson when you belittle them.
I understand the point you want to make: That perhaps Japanese women aren’t as sexually free as western - but objectifying them like that in front of a camerae doesn’t prove anything.
Besides: The thesis you have is somewhat cliche - which is to say…. it’s known. We understand the sexual stereotypes. But playing into yourself and trying to mentally dominate women on camerae won’t help.
Just my two cents. I’m sure you have the best intents - but I question your method.

You’ve raised some interesting, if not already known points.
Though it does appear that you need a neck brace there my friend.
The point about Zen and Buddhism in particular.
Correct me if I’m wrong but does not the concept of balance come into play. Not so extremely happy because you must always end up experiencing the opposite at some point which would lead to extreme sadness.
Thus by remaining in balance there will not be hopefully any terrible sadness.
Aside from that, there are centuries of conditioning to work with here.
Maybe next time a round table conversation so you can actually see some faces might be an idea though instead of the “round eyed” stalker roll.

Oh I totally agree with you! It is all about balance.
I studied Goju Ryu for ten years. About 3 years under Sense Kayo in NYC.
Goju Ryo encompasses meditation and breathing controlling the organs to achieve balance. Inside the art there is Zen and Chigun.
The origins of the art come from kung fu - Shaolin.
So I truly understand what is this about.
The social problem that we are facing, and I quite sure you agree with me, is the extreme disruption to the balance of Hard and Soft.
Go means hard in Japanese, while Ju means soft.
To achieve the human balance you need both. One cannot survive without the other.
Go is Sex, which is hard, Ju is Meditation which is soft.
We are losing our sexuality, not just in Japan but world wide!

I would make the argument Mr. Troll that while yes I am hitting on the issue on communication, it is not that there isn’t enough of it… but rather using the arguments of Michel Foucault in “The History of Sexuality, Volumes 1,2&3″ that there is too much of it. I would also say you are 100% incorrect in advising an equal opportunity repression system when analyzing any culture. That there are significant differences is gender experience, and that the sense of honor among the women is very different then the situation with the men. Getting back to the differences between Freud and his daughter… there is a huge difference between one wise man using inside knowledge to help people and using that same knowledge to surveillance a civilization. You are correct is assuming that these woman go wild after depravation, but you are incorrect in assuming that the depravation is a norm. My experience with asian culture is there is a lot more sexual activity going on… they just (unlike ourselves) don’t talk about. You know the saying about “Conservatives” have better sex live? It is true. By not extroverting bodily functions you create a society where it is more normal, but just not talked about. The negative side of this is a loss of honor and shame that is lived with. Asian society is un-Freudian.

Noah, I never said all Japanese women are Asexual. If you are examining Japanese women based on relationships you had with them outside of Japan they do not meet the profile that I have defined here.
But in Japan there is a huge problem. A lot of information never makes it to the Western shores. A lot of information is even a taboo to talk about it.
Imagine a 23 year old woman who only had sex with her husband to have a baby? Not because she does not want to have sex, but because there is no desire, on both part hers and his.
Have you heard of Maid Cafe? Where Japanese man go to have coffee and be served hand and foot by a skimpy made dressed young girl.

as a former sex industry advertiser for the NYC Yellowpages from 2001 to 2003 (yes the Emperor’s Club was a client of the Yellow Page I worked for, though not my specific contract)… I have not heard of a Maid Cafe… but America has plenty of paid kink and we import a lot of these ladies from over there. When I say Oriental, I refer to the philosophy not a race. Wester scholars have coined this term derogatively which I sympathize with you.

Ok, I’m going to reply back on here because it’s easier. I’ve noticed the transgression of the term “Oriental” to connote things. As in items ie: aisle in supermarket, rugs, the “Orient Express”, furniture, as opposed to classification of a race. Maybe the root of that transgression correlates to Western Scholars deeming it as derogatory, but currently that is the definition of the term… no? -
As for my hentai-ish comment, maybe I threw the word out too loosely but that youtube clip looked to me as borderline harassment. My culture in general is very shy and cover the awkwardness with the giggly demeanor. I’ve lived in California, as well as New York City, spent time in various other East Coast areas (Boston, D.C.). Referring to a person as “You are Oriental” is pejorative and prejudice.
It is like saying all Japanese woman are vain! I never said this, I did not imply it, and I do not believe it.
When using the English language it gets a bit obscured as to its application and that is called semantics. The subtleties are some what evasive but I am sure you can relate to the etymology and linguistic formulation of the word as with the complexity of the Chinese Kanji system which is based on symbolism. A Kanji will have a different meaning as one connected to another Kanji. Same in English language a word will have a different meaning when it is connect to another word.
It is all about context not examined in a vacuum!
Anyway, enough with the English language, I am sure you had it up to your years since the Kindergarten in Japan.
Your culture is shy but at the same time very overt and manipulative!
Young girls as young as 14 years old prostitute themselves to older salary men for income so they can buy Gucci and Chanel bags to show themselves off to their friends.
Salary men pay young Japanese women money just to have a conversation with them in a a social club called hostess club.
There is so much sexual abstinence that the man create very imaginative fantasies via manga literature that sometime resolves to tragedy as rape and in many case Chikan.
Japan has a big social problem in dealing with its sexuality because talking about it is a taboo.
Has Japan always been so sexually depriving? No! Through history Japanese people have been very open to sexuality if not promiscuous.
Do I think Japanese woman are shy? Not at all. They look shy from the outside because it is the norm that is put on them by society.
I hope you are not having trouble understanding of my analysis of Japanese Orientalism.
Do I know what I am talking about? I hope so. I have been living in Japan for the past 15 years, have been married to a Japanese woman for the past 19 years. And have had other relationships with other Japanese women.
I am not trying to belittle, demean, and marginalize Japanese women, Asian women or any other women. I want to show the west and east what is happening in Japan due to western influence. The Japanese society has become glass half full.
It has lost a lot of its traditionalism and has adopted superficially wester materialism.
The reason I asked you about your travels, because a Japanese person would have different interpretations about life depending where they grew up and what countries the have spent many years at.

I really wish you would get back to my point above about the inherent martyrdom of civilization. I don’t buy the issue that the west corrupted the east at all. All the bad stuff in the west is in the east and all the bad stuff in the east is in the west. The good stuff from the west like liberation philosophies (Moses, Jesus, Pericles, Mohammed, Marx and Jung) are rarely seen in the east… while much of the east is reflected in the self (Freud, Georges Bataille, Ronald Reagan)

Both East and West can get greedy.

If anything we have a lot to learn about shutting up about sex. communication and transparency is not a formula to success. Shame is inherent to human nature. A balance of repression is a healthy world view.
Death, Repression, Masturbation, Struggle are to be balanced effectively so that we can distribute dignity as best we can to all differing parties. Not all people are the same. When we start talking about equality and transparency… we can really get carried away by the talk show western culture. The best way to avoid the violent aspects of pain is through art. Interesting words about family. Yes I do agree with you it is important to have children with the woman you are with,, if not there is something missing in your relationship with your lady, So how do you feel that void?
I want to have children with my lady, but I might not be able to! She has a growth on her uterus and maybe even her ovaries. Her mother died from cancer when she was 14. I do not think it is cancer in her case, we have not detected that yet. Her family treats me with most respect, so there is no problem there.
My hatred for the West is not for the West but for Amerika. As much as I enjoyed growing up in America, Amerika riped my life apart. My mother has Alzheimer’s and fully sedated but American government will not let me see her. USA visa refused.
I do not hate Israel I love Israel it is my country and I am an Israeli citizen. I would love to live there but it is a difficult place to live at, and I do not have ties in the country. My family in Israel does not want to acknowledge my existence.

Japanese people learn English from the time they enter Kindergarten, so yes they understood what I was saying. Understanding English is easier for them than speaking it.
There is a bit of xenophobia in Japan, but it is paradoxical because they are attracted to foreigners.
So I would have gotten the same response if I would have spoken in Japanese to them!
They just love seeing themselves on camera!

I am having a great time here in Tokyo even though I am very busy. My stay is becoming more and more enjoyable as get to grasp with the language of the land.

Clement, the Japanese national education requires Japanese people to learn English from Kindergarten!
Most Japanese people are not interested learning English, they are too nationalistic! They take the English classes just to pass the High School entrance exams that have English part on them. Same goes for university exams.
Even if Japanese people speak some English they do not want to speak in in public. You do get a few Japanese people who want to practice their English or really interested in learning English but that is an exception to the rule.
Why don’t you get yourself a Sleeping Dictionary? You can have great sex and learn English at the same time!
